The verdict in 20 seconds
NordVPN wins 5–3 (2 draws). NordVPN takes the rounds for audit track record, security features, network locations claimed, payment flexibility and tie-breaking privacy depth. ExpressVPN is cheaper to start and to renew on its Basic plan, and is the better pick if you mainly want a simple, low-cost VPN from a long-audited provider.
- Choose NordVPN if you want the most features (threat protection, Meshnet-style extras, dedicated IP option) and a long audit history.
- Choose ExpressVPN if you want the lowest total cost over three years and a straightforward app.

Final tally: NordVPN 5 – 3 ExpressVPN, 2 draws.
Round 1: Privacy & audits — NordVPN
Both providers say they keep no activity or connection logs, and both have paid Big Four firms to check.
- NordVPN commissioned Deloitte Audit Lithuania for its sixth no-logs assurance engagement under ISAE 3000 (Revised). Deloitte reviewed it from 10 November to 12 December 2025 and reviewed standard VPN, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, obfuscated and P2P servers. Earlier engagements took place in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023. The report is available to customers in the Nord Account.
- ExpressVPN published a KPMG assessment of its TrustedServer system and no-logs claims as of 28 February 2025 (ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1), which found no issues with its safeguards against activity logging. ExpressVPN also publishes many other third-party audits and pentests.
A Type 1 report checks control design at a point in time; NordVPN’s series of repeated engagements gives a longer view, so it takes the round narrowly.
Round 2: Jurisdiction & ownership — NordVPN (tie-break)
- NordVPN’s data controller is nordvpn S.A. in Panama, which has no mandatory data-retention law for VPNs, per NordVPN. Its parent, Nord Security, is based in the Netherlands, and NordSec B.V. in Amsterdam is its GDPR representative in the EEA.
- ExpressVPN is operated by Express Technologies Ltd. under British Virgin Islands law. It joined Kape Technologies (which also owns CyberGhost and Private Internet Access) in 2021; ExpressVPN’s privacy policy states customer personal data stays under ExpressVPN’s control, not Kape’s.
Both are offshore jurisdictions outside the EU data-retention debate. For EU readers, NordVPN’s named EEA representative is a practical plus for exercising GDPR rights.
Round 3: Security features — NordVPN (tie-break)
Both offer kill switches, modern fast protocols (NordLynx is built on WireGuard; ExpressVPN uses its own open-source Lightway), and post-quantum encryption options. ExpressVPN Basic now includes ad, tracker-lite and malicious-site blocking. NordVPN Basic includes scam and phishing protection via DNS filtering, with the full antivirus/tracker blocker on Complete. NordVPN adds Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers — covered by its audit scope. Narrow win for NordVPN on breadth.
Round 4: Track record — ExpressVPN
- ExpressVPN: in 2017 Turkish authorities seized a server during an investigation; ExpressVPN said no logs that could identify the user were found. It’s frequently cited as real-world evidence of a no-logs setup.
- NordVPN: in 2019 NordVPN disclosed that a single server at a Finnish data-centre partner had been accessed without authorisation in March 2018 via an insecure remote-management account installed by the provider; NordVPN said no user activity logs or credentials were exposed and it moved to stricter server controls.
A real-world seizure that found nothing is stronger evidence than an incident with no data loss, so ExpressVPN takes it.
Round 5: Network — NordVPN
Provider claims: NordVPN says it has thousands of servers covering 225+ locations; ExpressVPN says it has servers in 113 countries. Location counts aren’t directly comparable (NordVPN counts cities/locations; ExpressVPN counts countries), and neither figure is independently audited. NordVPN’s larger stated footprint wins, labelled as a provider claim.
Round 6: Devices — Draw
NordVPN allows 10 simultaneous devices on every plan. ExpressVPN Basic allows 10 (Advanced 12, Pro 14). Like-for-like, a draw.
Rounds 7 & 8: Price — ExpressVPN
Official pricing pages, checked 30 October 2026 (USD as displayed; euro prices shown at checkout in the eurozone, VAT may apply):
| Plan | Intro price | Paid up front | Term | Renews at |

| NordVPN Complete (2-year) | $3.99/mo | $107.73 | 27 months | $219.48/year |
| ExpressVPN Basic (2-year) | $2.99/mo | $83.72 | 28 months | $99.95/year |
| ExpressVPN Advanced (2-year) | $4.49/mo | $125.72 | 28 months | $119.95/year |
Three-year cost (estimate, simple sum of intro term + one renewal, before tax): NordVPN Basic ≈ $233; ExpressVPN Basic ≈ $184. ExpressVPN wins both price rounds. See live deals at our sister deals tracker.
Round 9: Refund & trial — Draw
Both offer a 30-day money-back guarantee (ExpressVPN specifies new users). Neither has a permanent free plan.
Round 10: Payment privacy — NordVPN
NordVPN lists cards, PayPal, digital wallets, a broad selection of cryptocurrencies, bank-transfer options such as iDEAL and Sofort, and prepaid retail cards that can be bought with cash. That’s more anonymous options than ExpressVPN advertises on its order page.
